Tanzania’s mountains are in a league of their own. The Great Rift Valley stretches across East Africa with a drama that has to be seen to be understood, and for anyone who has ever wanted to test themselves against serious terrain, this is the place to do it.
Kilimanjaro needs little introduction. At 5,895 metres (19,341 ft), it is the highest point on the African continent, and reaching its summit is an experience that stays with you for life.
Its neighbour, Mount Meru at 4,566 meters (14,980 ft), is quieter and often underestimated, but no less rewarding.
And for those drawn to something altogether more raw, the Ngorongoro Highlands offer a chain of extinct and active volcanoes that few travellers ever get to explore.
