According to the geologists, the volcano erupts explosively every twenty to forty years with smaller eruptions every decade; the last major explosive eruption was in 1966, followed by minor ones in 1983 and 1993. Relying on its history, a major eruption is then expected any time now! A trek to the peak at 2878 m is rather adventurous; trekkers struggle up its steep slopes to visit the steaming, bubbling Crater; however most prefer to view its symmetrical cone from a distance, as the trek can be also quite demanding! Special equipment is not needed but the intense heat of the sun and the mountain’s especially itching vegetation add to its difficulty, therefore the treks usually commence early in the morning! Ol Doinyo Lengai can be seen and trekked during your Safari Tour or Trekking Tour; a couple of days can be added to your itinerary after visiting Ngorongoro and Serengeti on the way back to Arusha. You can also trek Ol Doinyo Lengai if you decide for the Ngorongoro Crater Highlands trek. Have a look at our Safari
