Flamingos Empakaai Crater has no roads and no human inhabitants. It is a Crater covered with dense forest and with a deep volcanic lake, where flocks of Flamingos can be spotted. The caldera is six kilometres wide and the lake occupies nearly half of its floor. The scenery is spectacular at every point. From the northern and eastern side you can look out to the dramatic cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Great Rift Valley and Lake Natron. On the eastern side of the Valley you might spot the snow capped peak of the Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is possible to camp on the rim and hike into the Crater with an armed Ranger.

Magma from Ol Doinyo Lengai Olmoti Mountain with its 3100 m contains a shallow grassy Crater and is also a source of the Munge river which through the spectacular Munge waterfalls fills the fresh lake in the Ngorongoro Crater. Enjoy a pleasant walk from Nainokanoka ranger post through the forest all the way up to the top of the waterfall.

Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only active volcano in East Africa and you can climb to the very top of the Crater! It is located at the northern part of the Ngorongoro Crater Highlands and at the southern end of the Lake Natron. A trek to the peak at 2878 m is quite adventurous; however most prefer to view its symmetrical cone from a distance. Maasai have named Ol Doinyo Lengai »the Mountain of God «. (more)

With Maasai in front of Ol Doinyo Lengai Lerai Forest: »Lerai« is a Maasai word for Yellow Barked Acacia or Fever Tree. The small forest patches on the Crater floor give shelter to Monkeys, Baboons, Bushbucks, Waterbucks, Elephants and Rhinos. A picnic site with ablution facilities is located in this forest.

Lake Makat is a soda lake and is filled by the Munge river. It is a great attraction with large flocks of Flamingos and other water birds coming to feed here. Predators hide in the swamp, waiting to ambush larger animals which come to drink to the pools and river. In severe dry seasons the lake often dries up completely.

Olkarien Gorge in the Gol Mountains with its dramatic narrow cliffs represents an important breeding site for hundreds of Ruppell's Griffon Vultures during the rains. In the dry season, Maasai move their cattle into the Gorge to drink.
