Depending on your trekking root, you can catch a glimpse of the following (see more in Ngorongoro Crater Highlands Trekking Tours): Ndutu Woodlands attract with a number of Acacia trees and many of resident Giraffes, Impalas and Elephants in the dry season.
Lake Eyasi is
the largest soda lake in Tanzania, with diverse cultures settled
around the area. »The
real Bushmen«, the Haadzabe
and the Daatoga tribe, can be explored here. Spend a day in wilderness
and go hunting with Haadzabe. Lake Natron is
one of the most beautiful soda lakes in Tanzania with its population
of several hundred thousands of Flamingos. It is situated on the
footsteps of the active volcano Ol
Doinyo Lengai. Along nearby
Ngaresero River Gorge several waterfalls can be found, where
swimming in the warm water can be quite refreshing. (
Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only active volcano
in East Africa and you can climb to the very top of the Crater!
It is located at the northern part of the Ngorongoro Crater Highlands
and at the southern end of the Lake Natron.
A trek to the peak at 2878 m is quite adventurous; however
most prefer to view its symmetrical cone from a distance. Maasai have
named Ol Doinyo Lengai »the Mountain of God «.

Lake Makat is a soda lake and is filled by the Munge river. It is a great attraction with large flocks of Flamingos and other water birds coming to feed here. Predators hide in the swamp, waiting to ambush larger animals which come to drink to the pools and river. In severe dry seasons the lake often dries up completely. Olkarien Gorge in the Gol Mountains with its dramatic narrow cliffs represents an important breeding site for hundreds of Ruppell's Griffon Vultures during the rains. In the dry season, Maasai move their cattle into the Gorge to drink. |
