LOCATION:
Longido is situated about 80 km north of Arusha on the way to Nairobi, just at the foot of Longido mountain, which rises up steeply from the plains and forms an important orientation point for people in the wide surroundings. On the mountain and the surrounding plains the Maasai warriors wander about with their cattle, looking for pasture and water. Once a week, on Wednesdays, the cattle are herded to a cattle market in Longido town.
LONGIDO DEVELOPMENT PROJECT:
Since 1997 money generated from tourists was invested in the construction of the cattle dip in Longido. Preventing cattle diseases is of a major importance for the Maasai. In January 2001 the cattle dip started its activities. A new water project is recently initiated. The VDF is now invested in this project so as to supply clean water for the whole community and their livestock. The community decided to take care of the education of their children. Many of the Maasai children live far away from the commercial centre of the village. For that reason the Primary School needs to accommodate more than eighty children. A dormitory classroom has to be built for assuring the education for these children.
FACILITIES:
In Longido tourists can spend the night in a clean sunset guesthouse with communal facilities. On request warm water will be prepared for you. Two campsites in the Maasai plain and one campsite halfway the mountain can host different groups.
