Lake Natron is one of the most beautiful soda lakes in Tanzania! It is located in the Northern Circuit in Tanzania’s far north (bordering Kenya), just outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is 60km long and on its southern part the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai is situated; and this volcano is really the cause of lake’s extreme alkalinity.

The main attraction of the lake is its population of several hundred thousands of Lesser Flamingos who feed on the lake’s microscopic diatom algae (the algae cause Flamingos pink colour). Flamingos come from all parts of East Africa to Lake Natron to breed and have made Lake Natron one of the most important Flamingo’s breeding grounds on earth!

Along nearby Ngaresero River Gorge several waterfalls can to be found, where swimming in the warm water can be quite refreshing.

Lake Natron can be seen during your Safari Tour or Trekking Tour; a couple of days can be added to your itinerary after visiting Ngorongoro and Serengeti on the way back to Arusha. You can also see Lake Natron if you decide for the Ngorongoro Crater Highlands trek.
