Mt. Kilimanjaro

»The Roof of Africa«, »the Crown of Tanzania«, »the Shining Mountain« or »the Mountain of God«, these are all names of the majestic snow-capped volcano, Mt. Mt. KilimanjaroKilimanjaro!

With its 5.895m it is the highest freestanding mountain in the world and the highest African mountain (metric converter)! It is unique in being so close to the equator (3 degrees South) and yet having yearlong ice glaciers and the largest alpine desert of all the glaciated mountains in East Africa. Mt. Kilimanjaro is wonderful to watch from the distance when the Uhuru peak is not cloudy, but only a few can resist the temptation to trek up to the summit. The climb is definitely a physical challenge, and there are risks involved, but if you are reasonably fit and aware of conditions which may occur, trekking Kilimanjaro will be an experience of your lifetime! In 1976, an 11-year-old made it to the summit, and in 1988, an 88-year-old reached the Uhuru peak!
